What Makes a Building Feel Like "Home"?

I recently had reason to visit my old high school -- I was making a donation to the school and was invited to come to the principal's office to deliver the donation. I graduated in 1986, and since then, the building had undergone a major renovation.

When I arrived in the parking lot on a hot summer afternoon, I walked into a side entrance of the building and saw a long hallway lined on either side with lockers in the familiar green and gold school colors. Five feet in to the building in which I had not stepped foot in 30 years, and I was overcome with memories and feeling like I was "home again".

Similarly, whenever I have dreams in which I am "home", they often take place in the house in which I grew up. I haven't lived there in 20+ years and have lived in many other homes since then, but I still associate it with "home".

All of this got me thinking about what makes a building feel like "home"

All of this got me thinking about what makes a building feel like "home". Given that I was only in high school for four years, I don't think it has to do with the length of time one spends in a building. I also didn't have that connection with college buildings or some offices in which I worked.

To use a cliche, maybe "home is where the heart is"? Perhaps home is where memories are made? There's a song by Miranda Lambert called "The House That Built Me" that seems to sum up the experience of going home again.

At Home-Build Concierge, our team of professionals can help you to get your custom, personalized house built, decorated, functioning, and manage the process so you have time to make memories and make it "home". We help you to get the process started.

Based on experience, my guess is that the best way to start making a house your home, is to live your life in your home -- whether it's a custom home, a temporary rental, or dorm room. Enjoy every moment and make memories every day. Don't believe all the marketing hype about products that will make your house feel like a home. Just live in your home and let the magic begin.
